What does assisted living provide in Tennessee?
A licensed Tennessee ACLF provides room and board, protective care, daily awareness of each resident's whereabouts, readiness to intervene in a crisis, help with activities of daily living, at least three meals a day, laundry, and medication administration by licensed or certified staff (0720-26-.07).
It can also bring in part-time nursing, therapy, podiatry, medical equipment and hospice, the same medical services a person could receive at home. An awake responsible attendant must be on duty at all times, and a licensed nurse must be available as needed.
Who is a good fit for assisted living in Tennessee?
Older adults who can walk or self-propel a wheelchair, can evacuate in an emergency, and need daily help with bathing, dressing, medications or meals but not continuous nursing care.
Someone who meets nursing-home level of care can still live in an ACLF with a physician's written certification that needs can be met there. See who can live in an ACLF.
What does assisted living cost in Tennessee?
CareScout's 2025 Tennessee median is $67,140 a year, about $5,595 a month, for a private one-bedroom; no Memphis-only median is published.
Medicare does not pay. TennCare CHOICES Groups 2 and 3 can pay for ACLF services for eligible members in participating facilities, with room and board paid by the member. VA Aid and Attendance and long-term care insurance also help many families.

The Health Facilities Commission's October 2026 bed report lists 35 licensed ACLFs in Shelby, Fayette and Tipton counties with 2,870 licensed beds, 774 of them in secured units; 31 are in Shelby County.

What should Memphis families ask an assisted living facility first?
Ask which license covers the building and how many beds it holds, what the all-in monthly cost will be at your parent's assessed level, how often rates have risen, how many staff are awake overnight, who administers medications, and what would trigger a move-out notice.
Then check the answers against the public record: the license, bed count, secured beds, last survey date and disciplinary actions on HFC's listings, which our facility pages reproduce for every licensed ACLF in the three counties.
