What kinds of in-home care are available in Memphis?

Two kinds: skilled home health (nursing and therapy visits under a doctor's plan, provided by HFC-licensed home health agencies and often paid by Medicare) and non-medical home care (hourly help with bathing, dressing, meals, housekeeping and companionship).

HFC's facility listings show 29 licensed home health agencies and 10 licensed hospices with offices in Shelby, Fayette and Tipton counties; some focus on infusion or pediatric care, so ask each agency what it serves. Tennessee's licensing categories cover home health, hospice, home medical equipment and professional support services; companion-only and homemaker-only agencies do not appear as a separate HFC license type in the state's facility listings.

What does in-home care cost in Tennessee?

CareScout's 2025 Tennessee median for a non-medical home care worker is $70,928 a year at 44 hours a week, about $31 an hour; Medicare-covered home health visits cost an eligible patient nothing for the skilled services.

Most agencies set minimum shift lengths and charge more on weekends and holidays.

How do we check a Memphis home health agency's license?

Search the Health Facilities Commission's facility listings under Home Health Agencies for Shelby, Fayette or Tipton County, which shows the license number, status, original licensure date, expiration date and last survey date for each agency.

For Medicare-certified agencies, CMS Care Compare also publishes quality ratings and patient survey results. Private caregivers hired directly, outside an agency, are not licensed by HFC; check the state abuse registry and references yourself.

Which programs help pay for home care in Memphis?

TennCare CHOICES Groups 2 and 3 cover personal care visits (up to 2,580 hours a year), adult day care and respite for eligible members; OPTIONS for Community Living provides homemaker, personal care and meals with no income limit on a sliding fee; VA Aid and Attendance can help veterans and surviving spouses.

Start with the Aging Commission of the Mid-South at (901) 222-4111.

What should Memphis families ask a home care agency first?

Ask whether it holds a Tennessee license for the services it provides, its minimum shift length, hourly and weekend rates, how caregivers are screened against the state abuse registry and supervised, and how a missed shift is covered.

For Medicare home health, ask how soon the first nursing visit can happen after discharge and how therapy visits are scheduled.
