What is a home for the aged?
A Tennessee home for the aged is a licensed residence that provides room, board and personal services to four or more unrelated, primarily older, ambulatory adults on a relatively permanent basis, under rule 0720-21.
Residents who need health care services are transferred to a hospital, nursing home or ACLF. That makes homes for the aged a fit for stable older adults who mainly need meals, supervision and help with daily routines.
How many homes for the aged are licensed in the Memphis area?
The Health Facilities Commission's October 2026 report lists 4 licensed homes for the aged in Shelby, Fayette and Tipton counties, with 30 beds in all, the largest with 12 beds.
Each one appears on the assisted living roster with its bed count and last survey date.
What should families ask a home for the aged?
Ask who is awake overnight, how medications are handled, who covers when the owner or manager is away, what the monthly charge includes, and what happens if your parent's health changes.
Check the license in HFC's facility listings and ask to see the most recent survey. A home caring for four or more unrelated older adults without a license should be reported to HFC at 1-877-287-0010.
How much does a home for the aged cost in the Memphis area?
No published median exists for Tennessee homes for the aged; CareScout surveys assisted living, not this smaller license type, so each home's monthly rate has to come from the home itself, usually below an ACLF's rate because no medical services are included.
Ask what the monthly charge covers (room, meals, laundry, personal help, transportation), what costs extra, and how much notice is given before a rate change. Homes for the aged are not ACLFs, so TennCare CHOICES Assisted Care Living Facility services do not apply there.
When does a home for the aged make sense for a Memphis family?
When a parent is ambulatory and medically stable, mainly needs meals, supervision and help with daily routines, and would do better in a small household than a large building, and when the family has a plan for where to go if health care needs grow.
Because homes for the aged transfer residents who need health care services, line up a licensed ACLF or nursing home option nearby from the start.
