Types of senior care in the Memphis area

Six care types, and the Tennessee license behind each one.

Home›Care types

What types of senior care are available around Memphis?

Memphis-area families choose among assisted living (Tennessee ACLFs), memory care (secured units inside ACLFs and nursing homes), small homes for the aged, nursing homes, in-home care from home health agencies or private caregivers, adult day care, and hospice.

Independent living without assisted-care services needs no ACLF license. Each guide below explains what the license allows, what it costs at Tennessee's 2025 medians, and how many licenses the state lists in the three counties.

How do I choose the right care type?

Work from needs, not labels: daily help plus medication administration points to an ACLF, wandering points to a secured unit, continuous nursing points to a nursing home, and a stable parent who mainly needs meals and supervision may fit a home for the aged.

Our comparisons put two options side by side, and the situation guides start from what just happened.

Which care types do Medicare or TennCare pay for?

Medicare pays for short skilled nursing stays after a qualifying inpatient admission, intermittent home health and hospice; TennCare CHOICES pays for nursing home care (Group 1) and for home care and ACLF services (Groups 2 and 3), but not ACLF room and board.

OPTIONS for Community Living helps with homemaker and personal care at home on a sliding fee. VA Aid and Attendance can help veterans and surviving spouses with any of these costs.
